THE MOUTH

You reach a massive mouth carved into a stone wall. As it opens, you realise it is a door!

The Mouth Door says, “Give me six flavours to savour and I shall allow you through!” A giant tongue unrolls awaiting flavourful offerings.

Be warned, trying to sneak through The Mouth may get you bit.

Solution:

Players must put six distinct flavours on the tongue to pass. Creative answers are encouraged.

1 - Sweet

Tap a nearby tree to get it’s sweet sap. In the tree is a vicious bees nest with honey inside. Players may have candy, ale or other foods in their packs.

2 - Sour

Try to pluck a sour gooseberries from a terribly thorny patch. A greedy farmer will sell you a lemon or you can steal a lemon from the guarded garden.

3 - Salty

A nearby pond has salt deposits at the bottom. Many cooked foods will include salt. Sweat will work too!

4 - Spicy

Nearby snakes and scorpions are said to have spicy venom. Otherwise putting any fire on the tongue will satisfy it’s craving.

5 - Savoury/Umami

Many cooked foods are savoury. Breads, meats, eggs and fish. You can catch a fish in the pond or climb the tree and steal an egg from an angry bird. With good nature check you might find cave mushrooms.

6 - Bitter:

Your players may have wine, coffee or chocolate with them. Otherwise they can forage for leafy greens or visit a shop.

Notes for the Dungeon Master:

The Mouth can give hints and rumours of nearby flavours.

Describe The Mouth tasting each flavour and judging it’s worthiness.

Creativity should be encouraged! Let players get away with some cheeky ideas.

This may come up, spiciness is a flavour but not a taste. Adjust the puzzle based on your opinions and try not to get into debates at the table.
